If you are moving a few items or a small flat, a man and van is usually enough. If you are moving a whole flat or house with bulky furniture, you want a Luton van with a driver and a helper. The amount you own and the number of people you need decide it, not the name on the booking.
The van and the crew are separate choices
People compare "man and van" with "Luton van" as if they were two different products. In practice you are choosing two things: how much space you need, and how many people you want doing the lifting.
Many man and van services run smaller panel vans. A Luton van has a tall box body behind the cab, so it carries more furniture per trip. At PM Movers our hourly plans all use a 3.5 tonne Luton van with a tail lift. What changes between them is the crew: the van and a driver where you do the loading (from £34/hr), a driver who also does the moving (from £44/hr), or a driver plus a helper (from £54/hr).
Which one fits your move
- A single item, a few boxes or an IKEA collection: a man and van job.
- A studio or one-bed flat: a driver who also helps load is normally enough.
- A two-bed flat, a family house, or heavy pieces such as wardrobes and sofas: a Luton van with a driver and a helper, or a full house removal.
- A move with several pick-ups or drop-offs: a Luton van, for the space.
Should you hire a van and drive it yourself?
It is a fair question: is it cheaper to hire a van, or a man with a van? The hire fee is only part of the cost.
If you self-drive, you also pay for fuel, you take on driving a large vehicle you do not know, you do all the loading and lifting yourself, and you have to return the van on time. A standard category B car licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg (GOV.UK driving licence categories), so a 3.5 tonne Luton is within the limit for many drivers. That does not make it easy to load, reverse or park on a narrow street.
With a driver you pay for their time as well, but they load the van the way it is meant to be loaded and you are not the one manoeuvring it. Get a quote both ways and add up the fuel, any extras and your own hours before you compare.
Three questions that settle it
- How much do you own? Walk round and list the big items: sofa, bed, wardrobes, fridge, table. If they fill more than a room or two, plan for a Luton.
- How heavy and awkward is it? Stairs, narrow doorways and no lift all point to a helper. Furniture that will not fit through a door whole can be dismantled and rebuilt, which we do alongside removals.
- How much help do you have? If friends will carry, a driver alone may do. If not, add a helper.
