Start by booking your removals as soon as you have a moving date, then work back from that day. This checklist runs from four weeks out to the day after the move.
Four weeks before
- Decide what is coming with you. Sell, donate or dispose of the rest before it costs you time on the day.
- Get quotes and book your removals. See our house removals service.
- Check access at both addresses: where the van can park, how many stairs, and whether the building needs the lift or a loading slot booked. Many apartment buildings do, so ask management early.
- Start collecting boxes, or arrange for them to be supplied.
Two weeks before
- Pack the rooms you use least first, and label every box with its room.
- Note which furniture needs taking apart, so it is ready or allowed for in the quote.
- Update your address. You must keep your driving licence address correct (GOV.UK: change your address on your driving licence), and tell your local council about Council Tax (GOV.UK: Council Tax).
- Tell your bank, doctor, employer and insurers, and arrange a Royal Mail redirection.
The week of the move
- Empty and defrost the freezer, and disconnect the washing machine, at least a day before.
- Pack an essentials box: kettle, chargers, bedding, toiletries, medication and important documents.
- Confirm the arrival time with your removals crew.
- Take meter readings at the old address.
Moving day
- Be there to let the crew in, and walk them round so they know what goes first and what is fragile.
- Keep valuables, keys and documents with you, not on the van.
- Check every room, cupboard and the loft before you leave.
- At the new address, show the crew where each room is so boxes land in the right place.
The day after
- Check your belongings against your list and report any damage to the removals company promptly.
- Take meter readings at the new address.
- Unpack the bedroom and kitchen first, so the first night is comfortable.
